This focus of the workshop is to discuss connections between terminology and the Semantic Web, leading up to a design session. Attendees are invited to contribute their expertise to create a useful correspondence between the Term Base eXchange language (TBX) and the Web Ontology Language (OWL).
Anyone with a background in either terminology or the Semantic Web, and an interest in exploring the connections. Tutorials will be presented to acquaint all attendees with the essentials of both fields. Also welcome: Lexicographers who are not antithetical to concept-oriented organization of lexical items.
Introduction: What is the Semantic Web? What is Terminology? And Why Connect Them? We will introduce both fields and discuss some of their shared interests. Presenters: Nathan Rasmussen (Brigham Young University) and Dennis Spohr (Universität Stuttgart).
Term-enhanced Search: A demonstration that the information found in terminological resources can enhance the Web experience. Presenter: Nathan Rasmussen.
TBX Tutorial: Introduction to the Term Base eXchange markup language, a standard representation of terminological information. Presenter: Alan K. Melby (Brigham Young University)
TBX-SKOS Mapping: A correspondence for translating controlled vocabularies from TBX files into the Simple Knowledge Organization System, a standard in the Semantic Web. Presenter: Alan K. Melby, on behalf of Sue Ellen Wright (Kent State University).
OWL Tutorial: Introduction to the Web Ontology Language, a Semantic Web standard designed to express relations among concepts more formally. Presenters: Dennis Spohr and Nathan Rasmussen.
Pouring information into OWL: A demonstration of the utility of OWL in representing specific linguistic information. Presenter: Dennis Spohr.
Design Session: True workshop on the use of OWL to represent terminological information. We hope that you will be willing to roll up your sleeves and contribute your proposals as we work out the beginnings of a TBX-OWL mapping. Minutes from this session will be published online as a guide to implementing OWL-based terminologies. Moderator: Alan K. Melby.
The workshop will begin at 12:30 (just after lunch) and run until 5 pm (17:00) The projected, approximate schedule is as follows:
